Chapter 8

Captain Colm O’Donnell moved through the trees on horseback, the sounds of gunfire further in the distance. Separated from his unit when the Union broke through the lines, he needed to find cover to make it back to camp to gather reinforcements and make sure his cover wasn’t blown by fellow Union troops. His horse stumbled through the foliage, and Colm knew his mount needed a rest. Eying a clearing ahead, one lush with tall grass that could serve to give him enough cover to take a few minutes to gather himself, he turned his horse toward the field so the animal could rest and drink, and he could devise a plan. He had been working as a Union spy for quite some time; he had garnered a few promotions in the Confederate Army. Promotions that allowed him easy access to Confederate battle plans.

Pulling out his compass, he tried to get his bearings. Only a few miles back to camp by the looks of it. Stuffing the compass back into his packet, he pushed the horse forward to the clearing and the river. Colm jumped from his horse and walked it to the river’s edge. The animal drank as Colm crouched to fill his canteen, wrapping the horse’s reins around a low hanging branch, then sat down. Taking off his hat, he pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped his brow.

Sighing and cursing at the same time, his voice was muffled but loud enough to rouse Katie. She moaned loudly only a few feet from Colm. Colm jumped and grabbed for his revolver, pointing it toward the sound of the moaning.

“Don’t move or I will shoot you,” Colm ordered.

Katie moaned again, but did not move.

“Show yourself,” he ordered, but Katie didn’t move.

“I can’t. Why don’t you get over here and help me instead of being an ass?” she muttered.

“Excuse me?” Colm replied. “Are you… Are you a woman?”

Katie’s head started to clear a bit more. “Well, ya, last I fucking looked I was. Get your ass over here and help me. You stuck me out here and now I’m hurt. Are you happy?”

Colm stepped closer and saw her, wearing a nightdress and her head bleeding. Colm shoved his revolver back into its holster and stepped over the tall grass to help her. “How did you get way out here, my dear lady?”

Katie moaned. “You brought me out here, you ass.”

“I don’t think it was me, ma’am. I just rode up to the river to water my horse and take cover from the Yankees.”

Katie opened her eyes and moved them up the length of the man crouched next to her. She gasped at first, then shook away the fuzziness from her brain. I’ve stumbled upon a reenactment. Gotta be. That damned Jesse has to be responsible for this. I swear that motherfucker is in for it when I get back. And here I thought the pranks woulda been over for him, but once a soldier always a soldier. “Well, you are not Jesse.
